WHS Accreditation Scheme Snapshot: Concerning trend in industry-wide fatalities

The Federal Safety Commissioner’s WHS Accreditation Scheme (the Scheme) Snapshot provides data analysis on a quarterly basis. The latest report shows data as at the end of September 2023.

The first quarter of the 23/24 FY has seen 140 on-site audits conducted. This is the most audits ever undertaken during this period, showing the responsive reach of the OFSC as the Scheme continues to grow. There is a significant increase in total fatalities recorded in the 2023YTD, with fatalities on both Scheme accredited sites and fatalities on non-accredited sites close to double the volume of this time in 2022.

Federal Safety Commissioner David Denney has said, “This is the worst year for fatalities that the industry has had since 2020. Every death is a tragedy. As an industry we need to continue to work towards the goal of zero harm, where every worker goes home safety each day.”

The highest rate of corrective actions issued during on-site audits during the 2023-24 financial year to date have been against the following criteria:

  • Health & Safety Management System Audit,
  • Senior Management Commitment, and
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
