Earlier this month, Mr David Denney was appointed as the new Federal Safety Commissioner (FSC), succeeding Mr Grant Lovelock who departed the role in July 2019.

David has over 15 years of Commonwealth public sector experience with expertise in industrial relations and economic policy as well as the management of employment programs. In his previous role, David represented the Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) in engagement with Australian Industry on industrial relations issues. He also represented the Australian Government at the United Nations’ International Labour Organization, where he has a track record of building consensus between government, employer and union groups.

Before joining AGD, David served in economic policy, employment program and corporate roles at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He also served as an employment lawyer at the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, and has previous private sector experience in law firms and construction.

Stepping into the role of FSC, David has said:

“Our overriding priority is to ensure appropriate systems are in place and implemented, to get all workers home safely at the end of shift."

The Scheme has significantly improved the culture of WHS and safety outcomes in the building and construction industry. I look forward to working with both industry and government to foster continued improvement and build the Scheme into the future.”

David thanks the team at the OFSC for ensuring a smooth transition, particularly Jane Heffernan for her work as Acting Federal Safety Commissioner over the last 7 months.
